Watch out for fakes
|
Ubiquiti has notified us that there are some fake products in the international market place that look like Ubiquiti items.
While we have not (yet) heard of reports of them appearing in Australia, be on the lookout for:
- Equipment appears to fail after a firmware upgrade. While they appear to run the Ubiquiti AirOS firmware, when upgrading a fake with genuine Ubiquiti firmware, the device will 'die'. This is because Ubiquiti has added code in the latest firmware versions that detect non-original hardware and then shuts down.
- Equipment that may not be weatherproof. Copy artists don't bother with niceties like UV-stabilised plastic.
As our Ubiquiti products come from the Ubiquti factory - you can be assured everything we sell is genuine.

UniFi Performance
While not from a Freenet Antennas customer, we read this interesting post on the Ubiquiti Forum.

I just doubled the number of APs I had in my classroom areas and everything works fine. I see 1000+ devices per day with 500-600 active at any point in time. Our campus is rather sprawling so I have 98 Unifi APs, however 90% of the load will be on around 40 of the APs at any point in time. For example during the day the load is in the academic buildings and after school it all moves to the dorms.
We push over 500Gb of data over the Unifi APs per day without issue. We are a BYOD school. So the kids are running devices of every type and form. About 35-40% are Apple products.
